St. Johns River Catfish Po’ Boys

A North Florida Classic

This sandwich features crispy fried catfish, fresh lettuce, and a zesty remoulade sauce, all piled onto a soft hoagie roll. A taste of the St. Johns River region!

Catfish Po’ Boy Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb catfish fillets
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • Lettuce, tomato, and pickles

Remoulade:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon relish
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce

Instructions:

  1. Soak catfish: Marinate fillets in buttermilk 30 minutes.
  2. Bread & fry: Dredge in cornmeal, flour, paprika, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Fry until golden.
  3. Assemble: Spread remoulade on rolls. Add catfish, lettuce, tomato, and pickles.

Variations

  • Use shrimp instead of catfish.
  • Add sliced onions or coleslaw.
